Window and door warranty in Ottawa. Two warranties, both written into your quote.

Vinylguard's manufacturer warranty covers the window or door itself and transfers to the next owner. OpenPane's 20 year workmanship warranty covers how it was installed, sealed and finished. One phone number for either.

Updated October 2026.

Windows. The manufacturer warranty.

Ours

OpenPane's 20 year workmanship warranty.

Applies to every window and door we install, for 20 years from the install date.

  • Installation, shimming and fastening
  • Low expansion foam, backer rod and exterior caulking
  • Interior casing and exterior capping
  • Draughts or water entry caused by the install

Manufacturer warranty

What the manufacturer warranty does not cover.

  • Damage from improper installation (that is covered by OpenPane's workmanship warranty instead)
  • Broken glass and torn screens, from any cause
  • Abuse, misuse, accident, negligence and improper maintenance
  • Harsh or harmful cleaning solvents, which void the warranty. Mild soap, warm water and a soft sponge only.
  • Condensation on the glass surface, inside or outside the house
  • Minor glass defects within CGSB tolerances (bubbles, crystals, fine scratches)
  • Fading, staining and surface dirt from sunlight and air pollution
  • Components painted or refinished after leaving the factory
  • On doors: caming discolouration, rattling wrought iron lites, and heat damage from a storm door installed in front of an entry door
  • Incidental or consequential costs

Workmanship warranty

What our workmanship warranty does not cover.

  • Structural movement or settling of the house
  • Alterations by anyone other than us
  • Caulking and weep holes not kept clear
  • Water from sources outside the unit, such as the roof, siding or flashing above the window
  • Normal wear

A worked example

The glass fogs in year 12.

On a window that is a seal failure, so it is a product defect and Vinylguard's claim, parts and labour. Call us, we confirm it, and the sealed unit is replaced at no charge.

If instead the window draughts at the frame edge in year 3, that is installation, so it is our claim and we fix it.

On a patio door the seal term is 10 years, so the same fault in year 12 would not be covered. We say that at the quote, not after.

Claims

How to make a claim.

  1. Call or email us first

Whichever warranty it is. Vinylguard requires every claim to go through the original dealer and to be pre qualified by us, so nothing bounces between companies.

  2. Have your certificate

It carries the reference number and purchase date, and Vinylguard cannot process a claim without them.

  3. We sort out who fixes it

Product defect: we file it with Vinylguard and arrange the repair. Installation: we come ourselves.

  4. We confirm the fix with you

On site, before we call it done.

Two conditions worth knowing in advance. Any delivery damage must be reported to us within one week of delivery. And a service call that turns out to be a non warranty issue carries a service fee, which we will tell you before anyone comes out.

Definitions

What lifetime means here.

Lifetime is Vinylguard's term and covers the product for the original and any subsequent owner, non prorated. It is not OpenPane's term. Ours is 20 years, fixed.

The certificate is signed by both you and OpenPane at install, and you keep the original.

The honest question

What happens if a company closes.

Vinylguard has been manufacturing in Ontario since 1991 and the product warranty is theirs regardless of the dealer. If OpenPane were not here, the manufacturer warranty would still stand.

Warranty questions

Window and door warranty questions, answered.

Does the warranty transfer if I sell?

Yes, both of them. Vinylguard's manufacturer warranty transfers to the next owner, non prorated, and OpenPane's 20 year workmanship warranty follows the house for the rest of its term. Keep the signed certificate with the house papers, because the reference number and purchase date on it are what Vinylguard needs to process a claim.

Is labour covered or only parts?

On windows, yes, the manufacturer warranty is labour and material. On doors the labour side is OpenPane's workmanship warranty, and we will say which applies before any work.

Who do I call?

Us, for either warranty. Vinylguard requires every claim to go through the original dealer and to be pre qualified by us, so one call covers both and nothing bounces between companies.

Does it cover condensation on the inside of the glass?

No, condensation on the glass surface, inside or outside the house, is not a defect and is not covered. Fogging between the panes is different, because that means the seal has failed, and on a window that is covered for life.

Why is the door warranty different from the window warranty?

Because the parts are different, and the manufacturer sets a term for each one. A door has a panel, a finish, a slab of glass and hardware that gets used many times a day, and Vinylguard warrants each on its own terms rather than one lifetime term across everything. The table above is those terms, and they go into your quote.

Both warranties, in writing, before you sign.
