Should you buy windows from a manufacturer or a dealer in Ottawa?
A company that makes and installs its own windows gives you one party to call, and that is a real advantage. A dealer closes that gap only if it gives you the same thing in writing: one phone number for any problem, a written labour warranty, and a named installer. That is how we run it, and the quote shows it.
Updated October 2026.
Option one
Buying from the manufacturer.
The company that builds the window also sells and installs it.
Advantages
- One company responsible for the product and the install
- Direct access to parts and replacements
- No dealer margin in the price
Trade-offs
- You are tied to one product line, whether or not it suits the opening
- Installation crews vary, and the crew is not the reason you chose the company
- Service queues in the busy season, because the same people sell, build and fix
Option two
Buying from a dealer.
An installer who sells and fits a manufacturer's product, and stands between you and the factory.
Advantages
- Product chosen to fit the house, not the house fitted to the product
- Installation is the specialty, not a department
- Local follow up from the people who did the work
Trade-offs
- Responsibility can split between dealer and factory if nobody puts it in writing
- Quality varies by crew, so the named installer matters
Decide
Which is right for your house.
The honest version of this table does not always point at us.
| Your situation | Our recommendation |
|---|---|
| You want one company and do not mind one product range | Manufacturer |
| You want the installer chosen on installation quality | Dealer, with a written labour warranty |
| You have had a warranty call ignored before | Whoever puts a response time in writing |
| A tricky older opening, out of square or odd sized | A dealer that specializes in retrofits |
Climate
What matters in an Ottawa winter.
Who comes back in year five
A sash that sticks after the first hard freeze is a visit, not a claim. Ask who makes that visit, whether it costs anything, and how long they take to come. Then ask for it in writing.
Who pays labour on a product failure
A failed seal is the manufacturer's defect, but somebody still has to take the unit out and put the new one in. Whether that labour is covered, and by whom, is the question. Ours is answered on the warranty page, which sets out what the manufacturer covers and what OpenPane's 20 year workmanship warranty covers.
What a lifetime warranty does and does not cover
Lifetime is the manufacturer's term for the vinyl, hardware and seals on a window. Glass breakage, condensation on the surface, and anything caused by the install sit outside it, whoever you buy from. The warranty page lists the exclusions in full.

What your quote should say.
Ask every company the same five things. The answers separate them faster than the price does.
- Who installs, and who returns for warranty work
- Written labour coverage, including removal and reinstall of a failed unit
- The exact model and its energy ratings, not a brand name alone
- Insert or full frame, stated for each opening
- Three written quotes. Ontario's consumer guidance says to get written estimates from at least three contractors, itemized, before you choose. It is at ontario.ca
Questions
Manufacturer and dealer questions, answered.
Is a dealer more expensive than buying direct?
Not reliably, because the manufacturer's price includes its own sales and install overhead rather than a dealer's. Compare the quotes line by line for the same opening, the same model and the same install method, and the difference is usually smaller than the sales pitch suggests.
If the window fails, do I call you or the factory?
Us, every time. The manufacturer requires claims to go through the original dealer, so there is one number whether it is a product defect or an installation issue, and we sort out which it is. How that works is on the warranty page.
Why do you only install one brand?
Because knowing one product line well is how the install goes right. We chose a family run Ontario manufacturer with a transferable lifetime manufacturer warranty on windows, and if an opening genuinely needs something that line does not make, we will say so rather than force it.
